Aim

Students will use demonstratives to identify and describe objects in the classroom.

Materials

• Real classroom objects (books, pens, bags, etc.)

• A few objects placed at a distance from the students

Preparation

• Gather objects and place some near and some farther away.

• Write model sentences on the board (e.g., This is a pen. That is a bag. These are my books. Those are the teacher’s papers.).

Activity Breakdown

1. The teacher picks up an object and models a sentence (This is a pen.).

2. The teacher points to a far object and models (That is a chair.).

3. Students take turns picking objects and using this/that/these/those.

4. In pairs, students ask each other about objects around them.

Instructions

1. Pick up something near you and say: This is a…

2. Point to something far and say: That is a…

3. If you have two, say: These are…

4. If the objects are far, say: Those are…

5. Ask and answer with your partner.

Concept Checking Questions

• “Do we use this for near or far?” (Near.)

• “If there are two pens, do we say this or these?” (These.)

Examples

• This is my pencil.

• Those are his shoes.

Extensions/Varations

• Harder: Students describe objects with adjectives (This is a big book.).

• Easier: Students point, and the teacher helps form sentences.

• The teacher corrects mistakes by asking leading questions.
